The “Yes, We Heard You” AI FAQ

We've spent the last 3 years testing and exploring how AI can be useful and not harmful, if explored thoughtfully and with specific end goals in mind. But you may still be skeptical and we get that! Below, you'll get a closer look at what we're thinking. Got questions? Send them over in the form on this page!

Are you saying I should use AI to write my book?

Listen that’s between you and yourself, but having AI write any part of your manuscript is very widely frowned upon, so we don’t think you should. Next Chapter AI is all about helping creators find the right AI tools (and some non-AI tools too!) to streamline all the things writers have to do that isn’t making art. And get them back to the pages.

Next Chapter AI Can Teach You: How to evaluate your current workflow, identify the marketing tasks that can be automated, and use AI to help you reach more readers while expending less of your precious time.

Okay, but what about the fact that AI will crank out a trillion books and mine will sink?

The slush tsunami is real. But readers don’t browse “All Books Ever.” They browse categories, keywords, people they trust. So you need to have a brand and marketing plan that taps into how people are finding their next read, today–so it can be your book!

Next Chapter AI Can Teach You: How to use AI to craft a strategic marketing plan that takes you from positioning statements and pitches all the way through metadata and launch day.

Models trained on authors' work. So I’m feeding the beast?

Short answer: yeah—ambiently. Like how doomscrolling on IG tells Meta all about our interests, using modern tools sends faint signals into the ecosystem. And look, only you can decide if the benefit outweighs that queasy “am I the product?” feeling. But you’ll only know once you actually try the tool (safely) and see the tradeoffs in your own workflow.

Next Chapter AI Can Teach You: How to use AI to immediately streamline, automate, and systematize your marketing efforts. So you can maximize your creative time, try new things at a low risk, and decide if AI needs to be a part of your workflow.

What do these “no AI” clauses actually mean, and does ANY AI use mean I can’t sign?

“AI use” does not equal “I didn’t write this book I’m submitting.” It can mean “I used organizational tools to keep my notes useful while drafting” or “I used Chat GPT to research trends.” That wouldn’t run afoul of AI clauses meant to keep out submissions written by AI.

Next Chapter AI Can Teach You: How to use AI thoughtfully so it supports the parts of your work you want it to (social media copy drafting anyone?) and keep it away from the parts you don’t (like the writing).

If I admit using any AI, will readers light me on fire?

Readers hate lying. Create an AI workflow you don’t mind disclosing, and you’ll never have to “confess.” Or apologize.

Next Chapter AI Can Teach You: How to identify the places AI can help you work smarter–and the tools that best suit your needs.

Models reflect bias. As a creator, shouldn't I refuse to launder stereotypes?

Correct. And we agree, no laundering of stereotypes. Treat AI like a rookie researcher: useful, lots of knowledge but needs clear direction and supervision.

Next Chapter AI Can Teach You: How to write prompts that return the information you WANT, reducing bias, hallucinations, and bad sources.

Isn’t AI cooking the planet?

We take this really seriously too. After doing our research, we feel we have to chalk this one up to “life is complicated.” Print books destroy trees; ebooks use electricity. We think this evidence-based perspective is useful. The takeaway? “Unless you’re an extreme power user, asking AI questions every day is still a rounding error on your total electricity footprint.”

That’s not to say AI has no issues! You will have to do your own calculus. We feel that understanding this technology—at the very least—and maybe knowing how to implement it effectively can change the course of creators’ lives. And we’re for that!
