At first glance, it seems obvious who should be leading the charge on navigating book publishing’s AI era transition. Big houses with budgets. Tech companies with engineers. Vendors with sales decks. Everyone else waits to be told what the rules are.
But nimble, creative independent publishers might just be the ones best poised to lead.
Indie publishers, author-publishers, university presses, nonprofit and association presses, hybrid presses, the entire universe of publishing companies that do not call themselves “Big Five”, have something the larger presses do not have. Smaller teams. Fewer silos. Faster decisions. A clearer line of sight from a question someone asks at the start of the week to a change in how the work gets done by the end of it. That is not a disadvantage. It is a starting position most large companies would pay to have.
And the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) is the trade body making sure independent publishers actually have the tools, framework, and community to leverage that advantage.
Who IBPA Is
IBPA was founded in 1983. With more than 3,500 members, it is the largest publishing trade association in the United States. Its membership reflects the full range of what independent publishing means today.
- Traditional independent presses (anyone who does not consider themselves Big Five or a large corporate publisher)
- Hybrid presses
- University presses, nonprofit and association presses
- Author-publishers (a.k.a. Self-published authors)
- Publishing service providers, including printers and distributors
- Students
- Authors working with independent or hybrid presses
IBPA’s mission is to lead and serve the independent publishing community through advocacy, education, and tools for success. On AI specifically, that mission has translated into practical education, championing guidelines, and providing resources that publishers and author-publishers can use right now.
What IBPA Is Already Doing on AI
The AI Resource Center. Launched in 2025 and available to IBPA members, the Resource Center is a centralized hub of AI guidance, tools, and education designed specifically for independent publishers and author-publishers, the people who are most often expected to figure this out alone.
Human Creativity First: IBPA’s Framework for AI and Publishing. Released in February 2026, this is IBPA’s public framework on AI. It centers three things in every AI conversation: human creativity, fair compensation, and a healthy independent publishing ecosystem. This is the value system independent publishers can point to in contracts, vendor conversations, and team policy work.
Master AI for Publishing. An ongoing IBPA workshop and Update series in partnership with the Independent Publishers Guild in the UK, this is a comprehensive overview of the opportunities, issues, and technologies in this fast-moving area of publishing.
Advocacy work. IBPA has partnered with the Copyright Alliance, the Association of American Publishers, and the Authors Guild on copyright protections, including pushback against the unauthorized use of copyrighted books to train large language models. They have provided member updates on legal developments such as the Bartz v. Anthropic copyright settlement. This is independent publishers organizing collectively on the questions that hit indie publishers hardest.
Education across the board. With webinars, the IBPA Independent magazine, the IBPA podcast, the PubSpot content library, Publishing University (PubU), Member Roundtables, and a member Slack forum, IBPA’s independent publishers members are not short on resources. They are sometimes short on knowing where to start, which is exactly what IBPA’s AI Resource Center and the Master AI in Publishing workshop are built to address. The next Master AI for Publishing takes place on October 2, 2026.
Why Independent Publishers Are Built for This Moment
A founder of a small press can usually tell you exactly how a book moves through their company. Compare that to a Big Five imprint where decisions cross departments, geographies, and committees before anything actually happens. Independent publishers can see their own workflows clearly. That clarity is the single most important asset for AI adoption that actually works.
Independent operations are also less siloed. The person doing marketing might also be doing publicity, or be the publisher. The editor talks to the designer directly. The author-publisher oversees or plays all those roles, including hiring freelancers to help do the things the author can’t do themself at a professional level. When AI helps, it helps the whole operation, not just one team. When something goes wrong, you find out fast, fix it fast, and move on.
The feedback loops that AI adoption requires are already built into how indie publishing operates.
And independent publishers are nimble. They can decide to try something on Monday and have results by Friday. They can be transparent with authors about how AI is being used because the people making the decisions are also the people on the phone with the author. Indie publishing’s structural reality is exactly the kind of operating environment most consultants try to engineer for their large clients.
Why We’re Proud to Have IBPA as a Summit Partner
IBPA is a Supporting Partner of the Human-Aligned & Ethical AI in Publishing Summit because our missions overlap on the most important questions: who gets to decide how AI shows up in books, and how we make sure independent publishing has both the literacy and the leverage to lead.
IBPA’s commitment to upholding human creativity, fair compensation, and a healthy independent publishing ecosystem at the center of the AI conversation is the same commitment Next Chapter AI was founded on. We approach it from the workflow and training side. IBPA approaches it from the advocacy, education, and standards side. Same conviction. Different parts of the same job.
